Toothache and dental abscess relief
Toothache that wakes you at night is your body telling you something. Do not wait for it to settle. Toothache usually means something needs treating: decay, a cracked tooth, an infected nerve or an abscess. We find the cause and relieve the pain. An abscess can spread if it is ignored.

After hours? Here's exactly what happens
Weekdays after 5pm, weekends and public holidays.
Ring the dentist, not a message service
You talk to the dentist. Together you decide whether it can safely wait until morning, or whether the practice should be opened for you tonight.
The cost, before anyone comes in
An after-hours call-out fee applies on top of treatment, and public holiday rates apply on public holidays. The dentist tells you the amount on the phone, and nobody is called in until you've agreed to it.
After 8pm, or if it can wait
Most dental pain holds overnight with over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the packet. Leave your details and reception will ring you first thing. An after-hours GP can help with pain relief or a prescription.
Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop: call 000 or go to Rockhampton Hospital emergency department.
Have reception ring me first thing

What happens
Triage
Call us and we will book you in as soon as possible based on how urgent it is.
Find the cause
We examine the tooth and take X-rays.
Relieve
Treatment might be a filling, draining an abscess, starting root canal treatment or removing the tooth.
Fix properly
We plan any further treatment needed to stop the pain coming back.
While you wait, and when to call 000
Until you can be seen, over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed can help. Do not put aspirin on the gum. Antibiotics alone do not fix a tooth infection. If swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, call 000.

Questions about toothache relief
Clear answers to the questions our patients ask most.
How much is an after-hours dentist in Rockhampton?
During business hours there is no call-out fee. Outside them an attendance fee applies in addition to the cost of treatment, because attending means recalling a dentist and an assistant outside their rostered hours under award conditions, and it is payable before the team is called in. Ring the practice and reception will tell you what applies tonight.
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?
Same-day appointments can often be arranged for urgent problems such as severe toothache or a broken tooth. Ring the practice and we will triage over the phone.
Will dental pain last all night?
Most dental pain holds overnight with over-the-counter relief taken as directed on the packet. Waiting until morning costs you nothing and is what we recommend for the majority of problems. Pain that is stopping you sleeping is worth ringing about.
Should I go to the hospital or a GP for a dental infection?
Where the problem is infection rather than a broken tooth, a GP or an after-hours medical service can assess you and prescribe if that is appropriate — usually quicker and less costly than calling a dental team in overnight. Facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or uncontrolled bleeding needs Rockhampton Base Hospital emergency department.
Should I go to the hospital or the dentist?
Difficulty breathing, swelling closing the throat, uncontrolled bleeding or facial trauma is a medical emergency — call 000 or go to Rockhampton Base Hospital emergency department. A broken tooth, lost filling or manageable pain is dental and will usually keep until morning.
Can I just wait until morning?
Usually yes, and it costs you nothing. Pain that is manageable with over-the-counter relief taken as directed will normally hold overnight, and we will see you first thing. Pain that is stopping you sleeping, or a tooth knocked out, is worth ringing about.
Can I get an emergency appointment the same day?
We can generally deal with emergencies during the working day. Ring us and we will fit you in, with no call-out fee.
What happens when I ring the after-hours number?
You speak to a dentist, not a message service. They will talk through what is happening and work out with you whether it can safely wait until morning, or whether the team should be called in. Most things can wait, and waiting costs you nothing.
