For most of it, no. A2ZDental in Rockhampton has a general anaesthetic theatre on site with a visiting specialist anaesthetist, a Morita CBCT scanner for three-dimensional imaging, and CEREC Primescan and Primemill on site for same-day crowns. Surgical extractions, wisdom teeth, dental implants, full-arch implant work and treatment under full general anaesthetic are all done here.
For patients across Central Queensland and the Central West, the usual alternative has been a round trip to Brisbane — often with an overnight stay, time off work, and a second trip for the review.
This page is about what can honestly be treated here, and what cannot.
What is done in Rockhampton
- Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth, including all four in one session, planned from a CBCT scan that shows the root shape and exactly where the nerve runs before anything is touched.
- Dental implants, from single teeth through to full arches. $5,000 to $7,000 for a single implant; $25,000 to $32,000 per arch for full-arch work, with general anaesthetic additional.
- Advanced implant surgery — sinus lift, zygomatic and pterygoid implants.
- Treatment under full general anaesthetic, in the theatre on site, with a specialist anaesthetist. Everything on the list in one session, home the same day.
- Same-day CEREC crowns, $2,500, scanned on the Primescan, milled on the Primemill and fitted in one visit.
- Root canal treatment, usually one appointment rather than three.
Pricing is indicative. Diagnostics inform final pricing — you receive a written quote before anything begins. For full-arch work, general anaesthetic, theatre and anaesthetist fees are additional and quoted separately.

What still goes to Brisbane, and we will say so
This is the part most practices leave off the page.
- Where the medical risk needs a hospital. Some medical histories mean the anaesthetist wants more support on hand than a dental theatre has. If that is your situation you will be told at the assessment, not discovered on the day.
- Cases needing a specialist we do not have. A2ZDental are general dentists, not specialists. Complex orthodontics, some oral and maxillofacial surgery, and some paediatric cases belong with a specialist, and we will refer you.
- Where a specialist opinion changes the plan. Sometimes the honest answer is a second opinion before anything is committed to.
Being told “we can do that here” by someone who cannot is worse than the drive.
If you are travelling in
Appointments for patients travelling in are consolidated, so assessment, imaging and planning happen in one visit rather than several. Tell us where you are driving from when you book and we will allow a longer slot. Follow-up happens by phone wherever it does not need you in the chair.
| Coming from | Drive | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Gracemere | 15 min | Close enough that same-day emergency requests are usually manageable |
| Yeppoon, Emu Park | 40 min | An easy coastal run |
| Mount Morgan | 40 min | A short run down the range |
| Gladstone | 1 hr 45 | Far enough that we plan around the drive |
| Biloela | 2 hr | Completing treatment under general anaesthetic in one session rather than several awake is often the difference that matters |
| Blackwater | 2 hr 30 | Tell us when you book and we consolidate everything into one trip |
| Emerald, Capella, Springsure | 3 hr | Assessment, CBCT imaging and planning combined into a single longer visit |
| Moranbah, Dysart, Middlemount | 3–4 hr | Appointments scheduled to fit a roster swing rather than a working week |
| Clermont | 3 hr 30 | Usually weighing Rockhampton against Mackay |
| Theodore, Rolleston | 3–4 hr | In through Biloela or the Dawson |
| Barcaldine, Blackall | 6–7 hr | Planning matters more than anything else |
| Longreach | 7 hr | The longest run in the catchment |
Drive times are indicative and depend on conditions.
If you work a roster
Moranbah, Dysart, Middlemount and Blackwater patients are usually working to a swing, not a working week. Tell us the swing when you book and appointments are scheduled around it.
For anything needing two visits — an assessment and then a theatre day — we will try to place both inside the same break rather than across two.
The general anaesthetic point
If you are weighing a trip to Brisbane, this is usually the reason.
Treatment that would otherwise take several appointments awake can generally be completed in one session asleep. For someone driving three hours each way, that is not a convenience — it is the difference between one trip and six.
The theatre runs two days a month and places in each session are limited, so the assessment needs to happen well before the date you have in mind.
Full detail on treatment under general anaesthetic, including what it costs
Before you drive anywhere
Ring first and describe what is going on. Some of what people plan a trip for turns out not to need one, and some of it needs a different appointment than the one they were about to book. You will speak to someone who knows what to ask.

Where a case genuinely needs a hospital setting or a specialist we do not have, you will be told at the assessment and referred. Assessment, imaging and planning are combined into a single longer visit for patients travelling in.

How many trips will it take?

They cannot be combined, because fasting and the anaesthetist’s pre-operative check both have to happen first. For everything else, appointments are consolidated into a single longer visit wherever possible, and follow-up happens by phone where it does not need you in the chair.
Can you do it all in one visit if I have driven a long way?
That is what we try to do, and it is the reason to tell us where you are coming from when you book. Assessment, imaging and planning are combined into one longer appointment.
What if I need a specialist?
You will be told, and referred. A2ZDental are general dentists, not specialists. Complex orthodontics and some oral surgery belong elsewhere and we will say when yours is one of those.
Do you schedule around mining rosters?
Yes. Tell us the swing when you book and appointments are scheduled around it rather than around a working week.

For a family in the Central West that is often a substantial part of the total cost of getting treated at all. Pricing is indicative and diagnostics inform final pricing.
